Anthony Simpson

Random Objects is one of my favorite independent small businesses. Over the years, I’ve bought products from there, turned other people on to them…I’m even drinking from their Midnight Oil mug right now while I put this interview together. So imagine my surprise when I find out Random Objects is a one-man show, ran by design dynamo Anthony Simpson. I had to talk to him!

We talked about how he started Random Objects and where his inspiration comes from for new products and designs. This is a shorter interview than usual, but Anthony threw in a little surprise. Read on through to the end to find out what.

Alrick Collins, Jr.

While doing research on designers and developers in the Big Apple, Alrick Collins, Jr. (or Ricky, as he prefers to be called) was one of the first I ran across who was happy to talk to us. There’s usually an ongoing debate in the design community about whether designers should or shouldn’t learn to code, and Alrick…well, you’ll need to read the interview to see where he falls on that spectrum.

Whether you agree with his position or not, his design journey to starting his own design business is very admirable. Learn more about Alrick in this week’s interview!

Inspiring Black Designers is all about highlighting designers who are talented.

About a month ago, I came across a piece called Culture designed by Chris on Facebook (view below) and was very impressed.

After visiting his website I was even more blown away not only by his pieces, but his consistency of this portfolio and his photography.

He was not only passionate about design but about culture, art, education, and beauty.

He is the nicest guy you would ever meet, so read on and learn why Chris is an inspiring Black designer.

Buck! When I interview someone, I usually ask them if there’s anyone else they know who we should reach out to and feature. BUCK! came highly referred by Leon Scott, so I knew I had to contact him. If there’s one thing I can say about Buck!, it’s that the man has two things: passion and patience.

The passion is about his work, and he’s done design for Heineken, Scion, Timberland, Adidas, and more. The patience is probably from dealing with me since we had to re-record this interview several times because of technical difficulties. (Sorry!)

Even with all that going on, we had a pretty good chat about motivation, networking, and the creative struggle. I think that’s something we can ALL empathize with as creative people. Let me know what you think!
