As designers and developers, we are bound to deal with different types of clients. Whereas most of them will be highly cooperative and understanding, others will prove a little harder to handle. Since the primary aim is to do business and make a profit, you need to be able to handle both types of clients.

During a consultation, you want to identify whether or not this potential client is a good fit. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether or not you want to take them on as a client. (Well, those of us who aren’t yes-men or women.) I’ve come up with tips on how to tactfully deal with the five major types of problematic clients.

It can be very frustrating when you spend 30 minutes to an hour on a consultation call with a potential client and it seems that they’re really interested in the service you provide, but something is holding them back from making a final decision to get things started.

There might be a few different reasons why a potential client might hesitate to hire you.

  1. They don’t have the money together yet for the project.
  2. They’re still shopping around.
  3. They’re undecided and need time to think.
  4. It’s just not the right vibe.

You might really need this project because you need the income, but this person is just not ready to get things started right away.

Maybe it’s not about the money for you — you feel passionate about taking on this project and helping this potential client succeed.

If you’re wondering what steps you can take to avoid this from happening — or what you can do to turn this client around — then you’re in the right place.

In the last two weeks, Creative Bloq, Referral Candy and Siderocket have all featured us on their sites, highlighting our work in the tech field to creating diversity!

Last week Revision Path founder Maurice Cherry was interviewed for Creative Bloq! As the creator of Revision Path and founder of the Black Weblog Awards, Cherry was asked to speak on the sensitive subject of diversity in the tech industry. In the interview, Cherry focuses on the importance of sites like Revision Path in showcasing the talent of minority designers and web creators in an atmosphere that is not always welcoming. Cherry addressed his actions to try to combat that stigma through his work at Revision Path by bridging the gap between the minority and the masses one interview at a time.

“There’s a lot of great talent out there that I felt was being overlooked and underrepresented, so I wanted to create platforms that would let these people shine,” he said.

Revision Path was also featured in “Diversity in the Startup Scene-28 Movers and Shakers,” an article by Referral Candy’s Melissa Tsang. Revision Path received the #3 spot along with Black Web 2.0. in the article that raises awareness of the lack of Black, Latino and female creators there are in the entrepreneurial field and highlights sites created to put a spotlight on minority creators and visionaries in the tech field and the movements they represent.

To top it all off, our site was also featured on SideRocket! Already a member of SideRocket? Support us by clicking the link and liking our page!

Senongo Akpem was one of our first interviews when Revision Path started. He has a really great site called Pixel Fable, which is an interactive archive of African children’s stories. They are fantastic tales of witches and demons, of talking animals and hunters, even of cunning ants and magic fish.

Check out a few images from Pixel Fable!
