Job Posting Title: Associate Art Director
W. W. Norton is seeking an Associate Art Director to join its Trade department. Focusing on our Norton Young Readers list, you will be joining an exciting and growing imprint. Working independently from, but as a part of, a tight-knit team of award-winning Norton art directors, you will be instrumental in shaping the visual direction and design identity for the program. The Associate Art Director will be responsible for the art direction and design of approximately 30 Norton Young Readers titles per year in the picture book, young readers, and young adult categories. As both a designer and art director, you must be highly organized, have a critical eye for design, excellent communication skills, and thrive in an autonomous workflow. An understanding of the young reader, picture book, and young adult trade market is essential. This position will report directly to the Creative Director of the Trade department.
Essential Job Responsibilities Include :
Manage a list of approximately 30 titles per year from acquisition to production.
Create and execute full book designs for a portion of the list.
Work with Publishing Director to select artists for illustrated titles.
Art direct projects from concept/sketch stage through final art.
Assign projects and supervise freelance designers for selected titles.
Provide covers and sample materials for marketing, publicity, and sales use.
Collaborate with production managers to review production specifications including color proofing, finishes, and materials.
Attend production, editorial, and other meetings, as needed, for the Norton Young Readers imprint.

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or equivalent work experience.
Minimum of 5 years of design experience children’s and/or young adult trade book design.
Portfolio must exhibit a clear ability to step into an art direction role.
Familiarity with contemporary children’s and young adult books, authors, artists, and publishing trends.
Creative and collaborative, suited to work as part of a small, flexible team.
Excellent communication and organization skills.
Self-directed, independent, and organized: able and willing to prioritize and perform a wide range of tasks at different levels, maintain schedules, and meet deadlines.
Excellent technical skills: fluency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
Must have the ability to manage a flexible list and tight deadlines.
Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.
Must be able to work full business hours from Norton’s New York City Headquarters. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are temporarily providing employees the option to work remotely.
