About This Role…
Note: This is a 6-month contract to hire position.

At NWEA, we believe in K-12 students and the teachers, administrators, and families who make education possible. Drawing on 40 years’ experience and a wealth of powerful data, our vision is to transform education by empowering teachers and students. The Experience Design Lead for School Improvement Services is a new position launching a first-of-its-kind service offering. We are seeking an inspirational design leader to be the driving force of creative work to develop an exceptional experience for educators, students, and families within a school district. Using Design Thinking and Human-Centered Design approaches, you will inspire the education system to achieve great things for all stakeholders. You will guide, mentor, and coach educators toward creating a positive and engaging experience for their students.

Experimentation, collaboration, a bias for action, and regular iteration will be the keys to your success in this role, helping to translate vague objectives to testable hypotheses. You’re an expert in harnessing the creative spirit and contributions of a diverse set of teammates. Alongside education leaders, you will be collaboratively setting strategy for a group of teams, experimenting on new ideas, creating a shared vision, and leading their execution.

Lead design strategy efforts to collaboratively prioritize initiatives. This includes planning, facilitation, analysis, and execution of design
Proactively seek out user feedback through interviews, observations, focus groups, and surveys to determine the long-term needs of the users
Recruit users for any studies you wish to conduct
Integrate user experience research into everything you do
Define the quantitative key performance indicators that provides a clear picture of the experience of our users. Regularly validate, analyze, and guide others on the meaning and use of the data
Inspire a large team from diverse disciplines toward a common goal – to improve learning for all students, regardless of background, and the educators and families who support them through creating exceptional experiences
Bring an inclusive approach to all projects, bringing forward the needs of those left behind and addressing the problems in a sustainable manner
Act as a coach, consultant, collaborator, facilitator, designer, or researcher depending on the needs of the school district
Lead the creation of user experience work products and deliverables for projects.
Perform heuristic and comparative analysis, plan and conduct user experience workshops and interviews, develop user profiles or personas, creation of site maps, develop wireframes, navigational flow or pathways that users will follow throughout the Web site or application, write UI Design Specifications, and participate in usability testing efforts

Education and Experience…
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in HCI, Human Factors, Information Design, Web Design or related field, or comparable experience in the Industry. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
10+ years’ experience in documenting and creating interactive solutions to meet the clients’ business requirements and objectives (provide portfolio of implemented user designs)
8+ years of exhibited knowledge in developing products or systems, or comparable education.
5+ years of experience creating and facilitating workshops that shepherd a team from a problem space to agreed upon solution
3 to 5 years’ experience leading the designs of one or more complex application(s) or services
Preferred, but not required: experience working with schools and districts or in youth engagement
Advanced knowledge of accessibility and accommodation requirements related to User Interface development preferred
